Strategically located
At the centre of key economic regions
Graubünden is located in south-eastern Switzerland and links the economic regions of German-speaking Switzerland with Northern Italy and the Alpine region. It is the only Swiss canton to border Italy, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Its proximity to the metropolitan regions of Zurich, St. Gallen, Milan and Munich creates ideal conditions for economic cooperation, production and access to national and cross-border markets.
Excellent public transport connections
Rhaetian Railway, SBB and Postauto
Graubünden has an exceptionally well-developed public transport network. Nearly 100,000 people use public transport in Graubünden every day. The Rhaetian Railway's approximately 385-kilometre network reliably connects key centres such as Chur, Landquart, Davos and St. Moritz with many other parts of the canton. This is complemented by the comprehensive PostBus network, with 127 routes and a total network length of around 2,200 kilometres, which also serves more remote municipalities.
Direct SBB services connect Graubünden with major Swiss business centres such as Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne and Lugano. Companies and employees therefore benefit from efficient connections within Graubünden and to the national economic region. At the same time, the high-performance rail infrastructure creates ideal conditions for freight transport and sustainable logistics between production sites, customers and suppliers. Many of the canton’s industrial sites have been developed specifically along these transport corridors.
Efficient by road
A13 and well-developed road network
The A13 motorway is Graubünden’s most important transport corridor and efficiently connects industrial, commercial and production locations. Numerous junctions – including those at Maienfeld, Landquart, Chur, Reichenau/Tamins and Thusis – ensure short travel distances for companies, employees and customers.
As a central north–south route, the A13 creates ideal conditions for regional, national and international freight transport. From Chur, Liechtenstein is about 20 minutes away, Austria about 50 minutes, Germany about an hour, and northern Italy less than two hours. The wider transport network is also developed and maintained to an above-average standard. Compared with many urban economic regions, relatively low traffic volumes, predictable journey times and high-performance transport infrastructure ensure efficient supply chains and short transport routes. The canton’s industrial sites, most of which are located along the A13, also benefit.
Internationally connected
Airports within easy reach
Graubünden offers companies excellent connections to international transport networks and economic regions. Zurich Airport can be reached from Chur railway station by direct train in around 1 hour and 30 minutes, connecting the location with more than 200 destinations worldwide. In addition, the airports in Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Bergamo, Innsbruck, and the regional airport in St. Gallen-Altenrhein enhance international accessibility. Graubünden is also home to Samedan Airport, a regional and business airport that plays an important role in business aviation and international private flights in particular.
Thanks to the strategic location, companies benefit from short distances to the economic regions of Southern Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Northern Italy. Cities such as Munich, Innsbruck, Vaduz, Bolzano and Milan can be reached quickly from Graubünden, underscoring the canton’s role as a link between key economic regions in and around the Alpine region.
