Attractive housing
Housing costs for skilled professionals and families
Compared with many Swiss business centres, skilled professionals and their families in Graubünden benefit from more attractive rental and purchase prices as well as a diverse range of housing. Housing costs vary by region and tourist demand. In many municipalities outside premium tourist destinations, however, they are significantly below the price levels of major Swiss business centres. As a guide, a currently advertised 4.5-room rental apartment in the canton of Graubünden costs an average of around CHF 2'340 per month.
In addition to attractive housing costs, Graubünden offers a broad selection of rental and owner-occupied homes in a wide variety of settings – from urban centres to municipalities close to nature. This gives companies a clear advantage: attractive housing makes recruitment easier and helps attract skilled professionals and their families to the region for the long term.
Family-friendly living
Family, support and education
Graubünden provides families with an environment in which work and private life can be combined to optimum effect. A broad range of day-care centres, playgroups and supplementary childcare services supports parents in everyday life. Since 2025, the new Childcare Act (KIBEG) has provided greater financial relief for families throughout the canton and further improved work–family compatibility. Since 2026, families in the canton of Graubünden have also benefited from child allowances of CHF 240 per month and education allowances of CHF 290 per month. Together with the nationwide provisions for 14 weeks of maternity leave and two weeks of paternity leave, this creates attractive conditions for families.
Many municipalities have their own kindergarten and compulsory school. The educational offering is complemented by upper-secondary and tertiary institutions such as the ibW University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Business in South-Eastern Switzerland, a strong vocational education and training system, the University of Teacher Education Graubünden and the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons. This creates seamless part-time and full-time education pathways – from kindergarten, apprenticeships or degree programmes through to continuing education alongside employment. Skilled professionals and managers can therefore continuously develop their expertise without having to leave the economic region.
A healthcare location with a future
Healthcare and life sciences
Graubünden has an efficient healthcare system with services close to where people live. The Graubünden Cantonal Hospital, regional hospitals, numerous medical practices and a comprehensive network of health and emergency services ensure reliable medical care throughout the canton. The offering is complemented by specialised rehabilitation clinics and other centres of expertise in the healthcare sector.
With Davos as a research location, Graubünden also has an internationally recognised centre for life sciences and medical research. Institutions such as the AO Foundation, the Medicine Campus Davos, the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF), CK-CARE and The Medicine in Davos (TMG) promote knowledge transfer between research, medicine and business and strengthen Graubünden as a centre of innovation.
Lower health insurance premiums than in many other cantons complement the high-quality healthcare offering and contribute to attractive location conditions for skilled professionals and their families.
The following chart shows the average health insurance premiums for an adult with an annual deductible of CHF 2'500 in 2024.
Exceptional quality of life
Nature, leisure and sport
Graubünden offers ideal conditions for an active and balanced lifestyle. Its 1'038 lakes, around 11'000 kilometres of hiking trails, more than 4'500 kilometres of biking trails and over 2'000 kilometres of pistes in Graubünden's winter sports areas provide an exceptionally diverse range of year-round leisure activities. International destinations such as St. Moritz, Davos Klosters, Arosa Lenzerheide and Laax epitomise the high quality of the leisure and sports infrastructure.
Graubünden is home to the Swiss National Park, the only national park in Switzerland, and therefore offers a unique natural environment with diverse Alpine flora and fauna. Numerous sports, cultural and music associations enrich community life and make it easier, in particular, for newly arrived skilled professionals and their families to integrate. The combination of nature, leisure opportunities and a vibrant community makes Graubünden an attractive place to live and work, with an exceptional quality of life.
